Tensions are rising at German-Polish border crossings as German police are accused of dumping migrants on Polish territory.
However, many simply head right back into Germany.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/po ... 025-07-01/Poland will introduce temporary controls along borders with Germany and Lithuania on July 7, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday, echoing several other European Union countries in reimposing frontier checks to stem illegal migration.
Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany itself have also brought back border controls, underlining a public backlash against undocumented migration that has strained the EU's Schengen passport-free travel zone.
"We consider the temporary reintroduction of controls necessary to reduce the uncontrolled flows of migrants across the Polish-German border to a minimum," Tusk told a meeting of his cabinet.
Tusk's liberal government has been accused by nationalist and far-right opposition parties of accepting numerous illegal migrants being sent back from Germany. The government had argued that the numbers were limited.
Debate over migration in Poland has turned increasingly heated in recent weeks, with far-right activists starting to organise patrols along the border with Germany.
Germany said in February that it was extending its own temporary border controls for six months.
Tusk, who has previously called on Berlin to do more to help its neighbours protect the EU's external border, criticised Germany's approach to migrants at its own frontier, saying it placed excessive pressure on Poland.
"Poland's patient position after Germany formally introduced unilateral border controls is wearing out," Tusk said.
He added that it had become difficult to determine whether migrants being sent from Germany to Poland should really be returned there under EU rules stating that migrants should apply for asylum in the first member state they enter.

Tusk added that the controls would come into force on July 7.
“We have decided to restore temporary border controls between Poland and Germany and Poland and Lithuania,” he announced on Tuesday.
The move comes in response to the German authorities dropping off migrants on the border so that they return to Poland. Under EU rules, migrants must apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter.
Germany has now returned scores of migrants to Poland who have, the authorities in Berlin say, entered Germany illegally.
‘Patient position exhausted’
This has angered the Polish government.
“I warned the Germans back in March; I talked about it several times with the new chancellor,” Tusk said. “I said that Poland’s patient position after Germany introduced unilateral controls is exhausted.”
German police were spotted dropping migrants on the border and abandoning them in late June. In response, citizens' patrols including nationalists and opponents of migration were set up over the weekend in border towns, resulting in confrontations with German police in some cases.
Tusk’s government had faced accusations from conservative and nationalist opposition figures that it had been accepting numerous illegal immigrants being sent back from Germany based on European Union rules.
Tusk vowed in mid-June that “If the situation on the border, the pressure [worsens]... I will not hesitate to make a decision to introduce temporary controls. It is likely that we will introduce such partial controls on the border with Germany in the summer.”
While the issue on Poland’s western border is related to migrants being dropped off by German authorities, the situation on the northeastern border is related to Russia and Belarus funneling migrants into Poland via Belarus then Lithuania.
Tusk said that the Lithuanian-Belarusian border is "not as tight as the Polish one".
He added: "The stream of illegal migration organized by Russia and Belarus goes through Belarus, Latvia and Lithuania, with which Poland has an open border.”
Tusk also announced his intention to bolster the capacities of the border guard and the Territorial Defense Forces, to enable "guarding the Polish-Lithuanian border not only at the border crossing, which we will achieve by temporarily restoring controls, but also on the ‘green border’ – in forests, on roads near the border – where checkpoints have been established."
“We will also check these places and catch all those who illegally cross the Polish-Lithuanian border and we will return them to Lithuania, in accordance with the rules and regulations,” he added.
Germany introduced border checks back in October 2023 in order to stop illegal migration.
German police have returned over 11,000 migrants to Poland between January 2024 and February 2025 under the EU’s Dublin Regulation and bilateral agreements, though there has been much speculation that this figure is in fact much higher.
