http://defensenews.com/story.php?i=7439782&c=AME&s=AIRTAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's bid to buy F-16 fighter jets from the United States has become "hopeless," a top Taiwanese official was quoted as saying in an Aug. 20 report. This follows up a report by Defense News last week that Washington told Taiwan it will not sell the jets.

Taiwan to develop precision-guided missile
http://www.defencetalk.com/taiwan-to-de ... ile-36552/"In case of war, Taiwan would be able to use the weapon to strike the air-defence and ballistic missile bases deployed along China's southeastern coastline," he said.
"This could be done without sending jet fighters near the mainland targets, and avoid risking the pilots' lives."

Why America should not walk away from Taiwan
Sep 24th 2011
Two main arguments are made in America to justify abandoning Taiwan. The first is that its ally is now a strategic liability. Under the “blue” (KMT) president, Ma Ying-jeou, cross-straits relations are better than they have ever been. But the “green” opposition is more nationalistic. The fear is that one day Taiwan will make a formal declaration of independence. China says it will respond to that with force. Some in America fret that in backing Taiwan, the United States risks being dragged into conflict, even nuclear war.
The second argument is that, even if it never came to war, Taiwan would still be an obstacle to better Sino-American relations. Give China what it wants, runs this line of thinking, and it will co-operate more on a host of issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to climate change. Rather than provoking China by arming Taiwan and patrolling the seas, it would be better to placate it, and throw it the morsel of Taiwan.
http://www.economist.com/node/21530121Strong American backing for Taiwan has served the region well so far. It has improved, rather than damaged, cross-straits relations, for Mr Ma would never have felt able to open up to China without it, and it has been the foundation for half a century of peace and security throughout East Asia (see Banyan). To abandon Taiwan now would bring out the worst in China, and lead the region’s democracies to worry that America might be willing to let them swing too. That is why, as long as China insists on the right to use force in Taiwan, America should continue to support the island.
http://www.economist.com/node/21530162The sale of $6.4 billion- worth of American arms to Taiwan in January 2010 caused China to cut off military ties for months. Military-to-military relations are likely to be affected again this time but, many analysts say, less severely.
For President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan, the outcome will be little surprise and no great blow. In recent years, rapid improvements in China’s fighter fleet have eroded the island’s long-held belief that it could dominate the skies over the Taiwan Strait. Against China’s 300-400 Russian-designed SU-27 and SU-30 fighters, even 66 new F-16s would probably have been too little to reverse the trend. And China’s increasingly accurate missiles (more than 1,000 of them pointing at Taiwan) could damage Taiwan’s air bases, making it difficult for the island even to deploy its fighter jets.

Muide kaur3, sa käsitled asja natuke ühes võitmes (kuidas Taiwan loodab, et hiina raketid need lennukid terveks jätavad).
Tegelikkuses on Taiwanil töös ka mitte vähem ambitsioonikas raketiprogramm, mille eesmärk on rünnata võimalikku invasioonilaevastikku ja Hiina rannikuäärseid baase/kogunemiskohti.
Lisaks F-16 programmile.
Muidu jääb inimestele mulje, et Taiwan üritab kääridega kivi lõigata.

Trumm, teema pealkiri on Taiwani õhuvägi ja mul ei olnudki ambitsiooni nende kaitselahendusest laiemalt rääkida. See, millest Sa kirjutad on loomulikult õige.
Hiina on üsna tige.
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/08/17/asia ... index.html?Taiwan will receive 66 new American-made F-16 fighter jets in the biggest arms sale to the self-governing island in years.
The deal finalized on Friday comes as China has been increasing pressure on the island, which Beijing considers to be an inseparable part of its territory.
Friday's announcement was made on the website of United States Defense Department, under the contacts updated section. The posting said the US Air Force was awarding a contract to Lockheed Martin, the maker of the F-16, for 90 of the planes as part of US foreign military sales.
No customer for the purchase was named, but a US State Department source confirmed that an order from Taiwan approved by the Trump administration a year ago was part of the deal.
The other 24 aircraft are expected to go to Morocco. Final deliveries are expected by 2026.
The new F-16s, known as the F-16V or Viper, will be made at Lockheed Martin factories in Greenville, South Carolina, and Fort Worth, Texas. They will be the latest, upgraded models of the single-engine aircraft which first flew with the US Air Force in the late 1970s. They will join about 140 others already in the Taiwanese fleet.
Australian military analyst Peter Layton of the Griffith Asia Institute said the F-16 sale could actually help stabilize the Taiwan situation, at least from a military standpoint.
"The sale will act to broadly maintain the air combat balance" between Taiwanese (ROCAF) and Chinese (PLAAF) air forces, Layton said.
"The PLAAF has significantly more air combat aircraft than the ROCAF, but in a conflict the ROCAF will be defending and the PLAAF attacking. The difference in roles and that the ROCAF will be operating over its own airfields compensates for the difference in numbers," he said.
"The additional F-16s will simply keep the balance into the early 2030s," Layton said.
While the US has long provided arms to Taiwan as part of the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, Beijing has frequently chafed at those sales, protesting them as a violation of China's sovereignty despite the Chinese Communist Party having never governed the island.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Monday reiterated those claims.
"The act seriously damaged China's sovereignty and security interests and seriously violated the norms of international relations," Zhao said.
A Pentagon report in May 2019 warned that Taiwan's traditional military advantages over Beijing in the event of a cross-strait conflict were eroding in the face of China's continued efforts to modernize its armed forces.
But since then the Trump administration has been stepping up arms sales to Taiwan, including Abrams main battle tanks, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and earlier this year, new torpedoes.
Then last month the US State Department approved a request by Taipei to upgrade its Patriot surface-to-air missiles at an estimated cost of $620 million, according to Taiwan's government-run Central News Agency.
