Pentagon says there's another Chinese spy balloon

The U.S. Pentagon has revealed that there is yet another Chinese spy balloon, Fox News reports.

The revelation was made by U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder on Friday.

"We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America," Ryder said. "We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon."

It is unclear where this particular Chinese spy balloon is now located. As with the first balloon, details are sparse.

But, on Friday, Columbian officials confirmed the news with a statement, writing:

On February 3, 2023, in the morning, the National Air Defense System , detected an object over 55,000 feet high, which entered Colombian airspace in the northern sector of the country, moving at an average speed of 25 knots, identifying characteristics similar to those of a balloon.

Columbia goes on to add that the Columbian Air Force followed the object until it left Columbian airspace and did not take further action.

Columbia claims that the ballon was determined to "not represent a threat to national security and defense."

Taiwan’s top weapons builder has test-fired a missile believed to be capable of hitting mainland China, as cross-strait tensions show no sign of abating.

It has also said it is working with local civilian companies to develop five types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to build up a drone fleet and boost the military’s surveillance ability.

The moves came amid increasingly active air and naval operations by the People’s Liberation Army around the self-ruled island in recent months. There have also been warnings from US military officials about the increasing risk of cross-strait conflict.

Witnesses told local media the missile, believed to be the new Hsiung Sheng cruise missile, left a trail of smoke in the clear sky after it was successfully launched.

The surface-to-surface missile is an extended-range version of the Hsiung Feng IIE, which is able to hit targets up to 1,200km (746 miles) – far enough to reach major mainland cities such as Qingdao on the east coast or Wuhan in the centure.

USA on asunud täitma plaani avada uuesti oma kunagist Aasia suurimat sõjaväebaasi Filipiinidel. See jäeti 30 aastat tagasi maha. The U.S. military will likely return to Subic Bay 30 years after relinquishing what was once their largest military base in Asia due to concerns over China's increasing maritime assertiveness, a top official of the local body overseeing the free port zone said.

The former U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, which faces the South China Sea, has become a bustling free port that employs about 150,000 locals, administered by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.

Manila and Washington have been in negotiations over setting up five more locations in the Asian country to build U.S. military facilities and preposition weapons under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.
