The protests in Togo are escalating.
For the past days, the country has seen major unrest as people have taken to the streets to protest against the constitutional reforms enacted in April 2024, which critics argue are designed to extend President Faure Gnassingbé's rule indefinitely.
The new constitution shifted Togo to a parliamentary system, creating the powerful role of President of the Council of Ministers, which Gnassingbé assumed in May 2025. This role has no term limits, allowing him to be re-elected by parliament indefinitely, a move opposition groups call a "constitutional coup."
Protesters are also responding to the government’s suppression of dissent, including arrests of activists and journalists, and a ban on protests since 2022 following a deadly market attack.
The cost-of-living crises is also a major concern for the protesters. Rising electricity and fuel prices have fueled public anger, with demands for restored purchasing power.
The protesters are demanding Gnassingbé’s resignation. His family has ruled the country since 1967.

Two days ago, militants from JNIM (the local branch of Al-Qaeda) attacked a Malian army base. The Russian Africa Corps, comprised of former Wagner Group mercenaries, was dispatched to assist government forces.
Russian state media quickly declared a triumph, claiming that 80 of the 100 attackers were killed. However, the situation soon took a different turn.
JNIM issued its own statement, saying it had ambushed a Russian convoy near the city of Ber and inflicted heavy casualties. According to preliminary reports, at least 16 Russians were killed, and dozens more were wounded in the attack.
Russian mercenaries in Mali have gained a notorious reputation for brutality. Just in the past week, they reportedly killed dozens of civilians, looted villages, and committed mass sexual violence against local women.

I revealed the Russian-linked reason behind the coup that ended civilian rule in Burkina Faso. I wasn’t wrong then, and I’m not wrong when I say Russia is eyeing more African nations.

https://x.com/visegrad24/status/1949771259639693801At least 43 Christians, including nine children, were killed in an attack by the Islamist terrorist group ADF against a church in the Congo.
The terrorists used firearms and machetes, leaving behind a large pile of bodies in the church.
Formed in 1995 by rebel groups, including the Uganda Muslim Liberation Army and the National Army for the Liberation of Uganda, the ADF aimed to overthrow Uganda's president Yoweri Museveni and establish an Islamic fundamentalist regime.
In 2015, the ADF split, with one faction pledging allegiance to ISIS and continuing attacks on small towns to target Christians.
Sunday's attack marked the end of a months-long period of calm in the region of Ituri, bordering Uganda.
In February this year, 70 Christians, including children and the elderly, were brutally BEHEADED inside a church by the Islamist group.
Eastern Congo is considered one of the world's most dangerous regions.
Nearly 130 different armed groups are said to be active across the country, many of which are focused on controlling the region's vast and valuable reserves of natural resources like coltan, cobalt, gold and diamonds.
Hostilities earlier this year between Congolese forces and the M23 rebel group ended in a truce on July 19.

Hospitals face severe medicine shortages, chronic patients are at risk, and malnutrition affects children. Cuts in U.S. aid and falling diamond prices have triggered a nationwide crisis
Hospitals in Botswana are running out of medicines for chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and HIV. Operations are postponed, and the poor are hardest hit. Emergency funds and military help are being used to distribute supplies nationwide.
Remember, Botswana’s healthcare was once a continental example, with decades of free HIV treatment and robust vaccination programs. Today, U.S. aid cuts and the diamond market crash have pushed the system to the brink.
Sadly, when there's corruption, any level of corruption, there will never be enough money for healthcare and governments will always be asking for international aid.
To be fair, Botswana was once praised for its strong economy and healthcare, and it historically had low corruption compared to other countries. The current crisis isn’t mainly about corruptionit’s driven by external shocks like U.S. aid cuts and the diamond market collapse.
Inimestel on siin raskusi toidu leidmisega. Raske olukorra tõttu söövad paljud loomatoitu," ütles linnas lõksus olev Sudaani ajakirjanik Muammar Ibrahim.
Piirkonnas on välja antud kõige tõsisem toidupuuduse hoiatus, sama liigitus anti eelmisel nädalal Gaza sektorile. El Fasheris tegutsevad abitöötajad ütlesid, et nad pole kunagi nii karmi olukorda näinud.
"See on üks hullemaid olukordi, mida ma olen näinud. See on tõesti üsna ainulaadne nii kannatanud inimeste arvu kui ka rahvusvahelise reageerimise vähese rahastamise poolest," ütles humanitaarabiorganisatsiooni Piirideta Arstid kohalik projektijuht Sylvain Penicaud. Ta asub praegu El Fasherist ligi 60 kilomeetri kaugusel Tawilas, kus viibib sadu tuhandeid põgenikke.
Piirideta Arstid on hoiatanud, et El Fasheri langemine võib põhjustada massilisi inimohvreid. Tawilas viibiv fotograaf Ahmed Abdalla rääkis, et olukord on äärmiselt kehv. Abdalla sõnul on teel vägistatud ja tapetud palju naisi, toidupuudus mõjutab eriti rängalt lapsi.
Sõjaväeanalüütikute sõnul kontrollib RSF ka El Fasheri õhuruumi, armeel hakkab laskemoon otsa saama ja Yale'i meeskond hoiatab nüüd läheneva tormijooksu eest.
