Air Baltic tegeles siis orkidelt lennukikütuse ostmisega isegi peale sanktsioonide kehtestamist

For as long as stuff like that continues happening, Moscow will not treat EU as serious about confronting Russia

After the war in Ukraine began, Latvian airline airBaltic purchased fuel from Russia, violating EU sanctions, found out Verstka . The carrier conducted at least 13 transactions , 11 of which were concluded in 2023 with TatneftAviaService. Two more were closed in February and March 2022 under contracts with Gazpromneft-Aero. In total, airBaltic imported 3,100 tons of jet fuel for 206.7 million rubles.
Information about this was found in declarations from two customs databases: ImportGenius and the closed archive of foreign economic activity of Russia. The jet fuel was intended for refueling airBaltic civil flights on international routes. In both databases, the product is listed under the code "2710192100" - "jet fuel". The EU banned such supplies from Russia in June 2022. In total, airBaltic attempted to make 28 fuel purchases. 15 transactions were marked as cancelled, but an expert in customs control told the publication that this could have been done to hide the fact that the goods were being shipped. He also admitted that the fuel was exported from Russia by air to a third country, and from there delivered to Latvia.
airBaltic denies violating EU sanctions. The carrier's press secretary Augusts Zilberts said that "since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, airBaltic has not cooperated with or had contractual relations with Russian fuel suppliers." According to him, the company purchases such products exclusively from partners who "follow EU sanctions legislation and policy." The Latvian Ministry of Transport, the carrier's main shareholder, provided a similar response.
At the same time, Zilberts confirmed that airBaltic transferred money to Gazpromneft-Aero in March and April 2022 for services rendered in March of the same year. However, he noted that “at that time, sanctions on the import of aviation fuel had not yet been introduced, and the airline had already stopped cooperating with this supplier.”
AirBaltic is the largest air carrier in the Baltics, flying to more than 70 destinations. In 2024, the company's turnover increased by 11.9% to almost EUR 748 million. At the same time, losses amounted to more than EUR 118 million, although the year before it operated with a profit of EUR 34 million.
