Liibüa pealinnas Tripolis alanud vägivaldsetes kokkupõrgetes konkureerivate relvarühmituste vahel on surma saanud vähemalt 23 ja vigastada 140 inimest, teatas Liibüa tervishoiuministeerium laupäeval. Kasvab kodusõja puhkemise oht, osade arvates on see ka juba alanud.

Pealinnas puhkesid ööl vastu laupäeva intensiivsed lahingud konkureerivate relvastatud grupeeringute vahel, üle linna kostis mitu valju plahvatust.

The flight, which carried military equipment, underscores Russia’s increasing support for General Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) in its ongoing struggle for control of the country.

This strategic shift could have wide-ranging implications, particularly given Turkey's involvement in the Libyan conflict. Turkey has been a strong supporter of the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli, which opposes Haftar’s forces. With Russia and Turkey backing rival factions in Libya, tensions are likely to escalate, raising the possibility of renewed conflict between the two competing governments.

Complicating matters further, Russia's Wagner Group has already established a presence in Libya, providing military expertise and support to Haftar’s forces. The increased Russian military footprint, now bolstered by the An-124 delivery, will give Moscow greater leverage in the region.

With Russia’s influence in Syria effectively ended after Assad's fall, Moscow is now focused on maintaining a military footprint in the Mediterranean, particularly through its involvement in Libya’s strategic oil and maritime sectors. To strengthen its position, Russia will likely seek to support the LNA in capturing more territory held by the UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU).

A Russian Telegram channel, known for its updates on Russian activities in Libya, reported today that a new airbase is under construction in the southern region of the country. The base is being developed for the Africa Corps (AC).

According to the source, the base is intended to be jointly utilized by the Africa Corps and forces loyal to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Satellite imagery reveals that construction on the airbase has been underway since August 2024. Strategically positioned, the base lies at the crossroads of Sudan, Niger, Chad, and Libya, offering significant regional influence.

Since mid-December, following the fall of the Assad regime on 8 December, Moscow's Antonov AN-124 and Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft have been flying daily from Khmeimim to al-Khadim in eastern Libya, near Haftar-held Benghazi.

The Russians have supplied mercenaries and weapons to General Khalifa Haftar's forces in al-Khadim for years. Earlier this year, All Eyes on Wagner reported that Russian personnel are now being accommodated in a secure compound near the base.

Massive clashes between government and paramilitary forces are now ongoing across the Libyan capital, with authorities urging civilians to remain in their homes while military and security personnel attempt to regain control in Tripoli.
