New F-35 Coating System
Affordability through innovation is one of the F-35 program’s top priorities. I often highlight smaller innovations that drive BIG costs out of the program. I want to highlight work from the Aircraft Final Finishes (AFF) team driving out $49 million over the life of the program. If you’ve seen an F-35 flying, the saw tooth paneling is visible to the eye. Through a new coating system, the team was able to give the F-35 one uniform coat that saved a significant number of hours per unit in defects and rework.
James Thistle was the first to suggest the new coatings, now referred to as the Z13 overcoat. It took five years and a lot of hard work to incorporate the new coatings. The team used AF- 104 as a trial run with no issues, and James said it was worth the wait. The Z13 overcoat significantly reduces the need for many of the labor-intensive tasks that drove rework and repair hours up. As you can see from this infographic, the new F-35 coating being utilized in the coming months is a significant affordability initiative saving time and money while helping build a better aircraft. Great work to the AFF team on their affordability through innovation. For Lockheed Martin team members, you can read more on insideLM
Rõhutaks maakeeli üle, et kogu nende lüli lasti "heade" poolt alla, ilma et nad oleks saanud mingit tagasisidet ei AWACSilt ega maapealt (asudes seejuures õhutõrje "mullis"), k.a. reporteri enda lennuk, mis lasti alla (eelmainitud null-hoiatusega!) Eurofighteri poolt. As luck would have it, it would be a Royal Air Force Typhoon] that ultimately took down Tsar and I in Vodka 3. Within minutes of starting the fight, Vodka 1 and Vodka 2 were taken down before we even knew our flight was under attack. As Tsar started to maneuver our aircraft, trying to evade an enemy we couldn’t see, a Typhoon coordinating with an F-22 quickly and unceremoniously dispatched us. Unfortunately, the weather was terrible and we were ordered to return to base because of the need to maintain high fuel reserves—but normally the T-38s “regenerate” or come back to life several times during a sortie. But the bottom line is: Seeing is believing—the Raptor and Typhoon are a lethal combination.
...
Flying back to Langley, the experience was an eye-opener. I have been covering the Raptor and the F-35 since beginning of both programs. It is one thing to intellectually grasp the power of stealth, but seeing it in action makes one a believer—our flight had no idea, no warning from the AWACS or GCI that we were about to be hit until it was all over. It’s nearly impossible to fight an enemy you can’t see.
While it was heavily reported that the F-35A had achieved a 20:1 kill ratio, the details of the exercise has naturally been kept under wraps. As such, it was very interesting to hear Cooper describe his first-hand experience of operating Typhoons together with the F-35’s. As could be expected, he described the F-35 regularly operating within the engagement zones of the REDFOR air defences. Compared to other non-stealthy fighters, the Typhoon was in turn able to achieve greater stand-off range for its weapons, thanks to its ability to operate higher and faster. This allowed it to lay further back, often remaining outside of the threat range. What all seemed to agree on, was that the the F-35 transmitting sensor data on Link 16 provided a huge boost in situational awareness for the rest of the fleet.

“Both airplanes are fantastic airplanes,” Godfrey had said. “A mix would always be better [than operating only F-35’s or Typhoons].” When pressed further for which one he would choose if he could only get one, Godfrey had smiled and just said “Both”.
Sama kehtib 4,5. generatsiooni "eurooplaste" kohta vahest veelgi enam. Eurofighter suudab kanda muljetavaldavalt suurt kogust õhk-õhk rakette, lennata F-22 sarnasel kõrgusel (60 000 jalga) ning ületada helikiirust õhk-õhk laadungiga järelpõletita väidetavalt kuskile Mach 1,4 kanti (kunagise lekkinud Šveitsi hanke lekke põhjal), andes talle seega "pikemas käed". F-35 suudab jälle palju paremini avastada vastaseid ning jagada sihtmärgi-infot, olles ise tegevusele lähemal. Samas on F-35 enda sisemine relvalaadung piiratud (eriti praeguses varajases tarkvaraversioonis), ning seda ahendab veelgi vajadus varuda pomme õhutõrje vastu (õnneks ainult osadele lennukitele grupis).SLD: So the F-22 underwrites the overall capability of the joint force?
Lieutenant-Colonel Berke: Exactly. Our perception of what we do in the joint force is to enhance the entire joint force’s survivability. If we can keep somebody alive for longer or keep somebody alive closer to the threat, that makes them more lethal and then in turn makes us, and everyone, more survivable. So there’s a lot of synergy back and forth, there’s nothing more lethal than four Hornets and two Raptors.
We’re a lot more lethal with four Hornets and we’re more survivable with four Hornets . That’s something that’s often overlooked; how much less of an opportunity the threat has to kill a Raptor because there are Hornets flying with us. It will be even more true with the JSFs operating; two JSF will be a lot more survivable with four Hornets than they are by themselves. And everyone becomes more lethal as a result.

See on jah GAO (ühe USA järelvalveasutuse) raporti refereering.
