Huvitav ajalooline sündmus, kui see tõesti nii oli....
An interesting historical occurrence, if this truly was so....
1899-1901 toimus Hiinas võõramaise ülemvõimu vastane Bokserite ehk Yihetuani ülestõus. Ülestõusnud piirasid juunis 1900 ümber välissaatkondade linnaosa Peking'is (Beijing'is) ja sundisid valitsuse välisriikidele sõda kuulutama.
Kaks tulevase XX sajandi üliriiki suhtlesid kolmanda pinnal eesti keele vahendusel.
The Chinese Boxer, or Yihetuani Rebellion, occurred between 1899 and 1901, where the Chinese wanted to get rid of all of the "western influences" in China. Chinese military forces surrounded the diplomatic quarter in Peking (Beijing), and forced the Chinese government to declare war on all of the foreigners.
Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Japan, the USA and Russia sent an international expeditionary force to Peking, to rescue the civilians in the diplomatic quarter. The "allied" military force numbered close to 40.000 men.
During one period of the fighting, Imperial Russian and US forces were situated right next to each other, but they encountered a serious communication problem - no Russian soldier spoke Engish - and no American soldier spoke Russian. As luck would have it, there was a Russian soldier there, who was of Estonian heritage - and there was also an American soldier there, who was of Estonian heritage (but he did not speak any Russian). Two major powers of the 20th Century, fighting in a foreign land - used Estonian to communicate, liaise with each other.
