Ungari ostab 209 Lynx jalaväe lahingumasinat
The 209 new Lynx infantry fighting vehicles that the Hungarian government is purchasing from Rheinmetall - we reported - will be equipped with Rheinmetall's StrikeShield Hard-Kill Active Protection System (APS). Hungary is the newest customer of this innovative technology, which has been part of the Rheinmetall technology portfolio since 2006. StrikeShield is developed, produced and supplied by Rheinmetall Protection Systems GmbH. The order volume is over € 140 million. A major reason for the procurement of the StrikeShield system is the readiness of the NATO member to take part in challenging operations in which their own forces are exposed to the threats of modern anti-tank weapons.
StrikeShield is the third and latest generation of Rheinmetall Active Defense System (ADS) technology, a special variant of a hard-kill APS system. The ADS is a distributed system, whereby the sensors and countermeasures are integrated into the contour and architecture of the entire vehicle. In addition to other advantages, StrikeShield stands out from the competition with the lowest emissions in the electromagnetic spectrum as well as the fastest, safest and most reliable reaction speed in ambush or multi-hit scenarios. The vehicle is thus protected against unguided and guided shaped charge threats, since approaching projectiles are neutralized before they hit the vehicle.
The StrikeShield APS is integrated directly into the hybrid protection modules of the Lynx. Instead of conventional, passive additional armor modules, the vehicle receives specially designed passive protection solutions in which the components of the APS are fully integrated between the hull and outer shell of the vehicle.
"We see enormous advantages in using our unique hybrid protection design," said Dr. Manfred Salk, CEO of Rheinmetall Protection Systems GmbH. “The threats against which classic passive protection is designed are standardized and established. Hybrid designs are different from this. They allow us to better deal with new threats and the resulting effects. This includes, for example, the residual energy of destroyed missiles that hit the vehicle hull and deflagrate. The combination of passive and active protection technologies to hybrid protection solutions gives our customers unique advantages in terms of protection performance, but also in terms of weight and cost efficiency. ”

The Romanian government has approved and sent to the parliament a draft bill that will allow the country to buy Naval Strike Missile coastal defense systems through a foreign military sales (FMS) procedure.
“The anti-ship missile systems that are to be purchased include, but are not limited to, four mobile launch vehicles, a platform for command, control and communications, transport and loading/unloading platforms, sensors, initial logistics support, maintenance and testing equipment,” the Romanian Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.
Developed by Raytheon and Kongsberg, the NSM is a sea-skimming, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile. Last October, the U.S. State Department approved its potential sale after Bucharest requested to purchase two coastal defense systems.
The potential contract is estimated at roughly $286 million, but its precise value is to be determined when the acquisition procedure begins, according to the ministry.
Previous estimates put the procurement’s expected value at €137 million, or $166.5 million. Under Romanian law, purchases of weapons and military equipment worth more than €100 million must be approved by the country’s parliament.
The ministry said it aimed to acquire the systems by 2024.
The Romanian center-right coalition government controls a majority of the seats in both the upper and lower chamber of the parliament which means that lawmakers are most likely to pass the government’s bill.
