Araabiamaailmas süüdistatakse läänt niiehknii kõiges, vaevalt see eriti ÜRO julgeolekunõukogus mingi motivatsioon on.

“NO BATTLE plan ever survives first contact with the enemy,” Helmuth von Moltke, a 19th-century head of the Prussian army, famously observed. That is amply true of the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) published by the government last October. Paul Cornish of Chatham House, a think-tank, thinks it might prove “one of the fastest failures in modern British strategic history”.
http://www.economist.com/node/18712682? ... d=18712682For example, HMS Cumberland, one of four Type-22 frigates identified for retirement, was on its way home to be decommissioned before it was sent into action, first ferrying British nationals to safety and then helping to enforce the maritime exclusion zone off the coast of Libya. Similarly, the Nimrod R1 reconnaissance aircraft, due to be scrapped in March, has won a stay of execution because it was needed in Libya. The brunt of Britain’s contribution to striking at the Libyan regime’s military infrastructure has been borne by Tornado GR4s. The number of Tornado squadrons is scheduled to be reduced from seven to five next month.
And had the SDSR not decided that Britain could take the risk of going a decade without an aircraft-carrier, the already decommissioned HMS Ark Royal and its Harrier jets would have joined carriers from France, Italy and America off the Libyan coast. Able to respond more quickly than the Tornados that are flying from Italy, the Harriers would have been especially handy for attacking Muammar Qaddafi’s tanks and mobile rocket-launchers. It turns out that much of the “legacy equipment for which there is no requirement”—to quote the SDSR—is still pretty useful.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has joined American and other European leaders in calling for Moammar Gadhafi to step down from power, a shift that appears to indicate a closing diplomatic window for the longtime Libyan strongman.
Medvedev's call for Gadhafi to step aside came at the end of the Group of Eight summit in Deauville, France, on Friday. The G8 includes the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy and Russia.
His statement came on the heels of a request from the other G8 leaders to have the Russian leader mediate a settlement.
http://defensetech.org/2011/05/31/weste ... -in-libya/Check out this great footage by Al Jazeera of Libyan rebels fighting Gadhafi’s troops. Most significant are the images of what are supposedly armed western troops liasing with the rebels at the 2:10 mark. This may well be the first footage of western “boots on the ground” (sorry to use that clichéd term) at the front lines of the Libyan fight.
Ca pool kuud tagasi oli isegi Aktuaalses Kaameras mingi uudislugu, kus taustavideos valge naha ja sirge rühiga sõdalane araablaste demovägitükke kaine pilguga pealt vaatas.kaur3 kirjutas:http://defensetech.org/2011/05/31/weste ... -in-libya/Check out this great footage by Al Jazeera of Libyan rebels fighting Gadhafi’s troops. Leidsin sellise huvitava video ühest teisest foorumist. Nendele maasturitele saab vist kõike peale panna kui ainult viitsimist on.

Robert Gates’s parting shot exposes Europe’s military failings
Jun 16th 2011
Libya reveals an uncomfortable fact about NATO. Its military strength is determined mainly by what America is ready to put in. Without America, the military punch of even the most powerful European members, Britain and France, is limited. What is more, as Mr Gates also said, Europeans should not take America’s commitment for granted. He is among the last American cold warriors to hold office; a new generation of leaders may not share his attachment to the alliance, and may even come to see it as a burden. Unless Europe does more, NATO faces “collective military irrelevance” and a “dim and dismal future”.
http://www.economist.com/node/18836734? ... d=18836734Countries want neither to depend on others nor to be dragged into somebody else’s war. Some have defence industries to prop up. But Denmark has given up submarines, letting it play a bigger role in Afghanistan and Libya. Several countries share C-17 transport aircraft. Last year’s Franco-British defence pact points the way: the two countries will co-operate in, among other things, nuclear tests, aircraft-carrier operations and a joint expeditionary force, as well as unglamorous but vital support tasks. The lesson is clear: pool it or lose it.
French Confirm Arms Drops to Libyan Rebels

http://defensenews.com/story.php?i=6951680&c=EUR&s=TOPAccording to Le Figaro, the French arms shipments are dropped from planes across the Djebel Nafusa region, where Berber tribes have risen to join the revolt against Ghadafi's rule and seized several provincial towns.
The crates hold assault rifles, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, it said, and also European-made Milan anti-tank missiles, a powerful addition to the rebel arsenal that can destroy a tank or a bunker.
