I'll tell you how it was. A group of volunteers from the Oryol region stands in front of the tent of the battalion headquarters. The queue reaches me. I go inside. Several people are sitting in front of me. Later I learn that this is the chief of staff of the battalion and his deputy. The chief of staff looks at my military ID. Having read in it that I am a participant in the counter-terrorist operation in the Chechen Republic and an ensign of the reserve immediately offers me the position of commander of a fire support platoon.
I immediately begin to object that I would prefer the position of an ordinary shooter, but not a command position, especially an officer position of a platoon commander. I perfectly understand what kind of responsibility this is, since for half a year in 2015 I was the commander of a motorized rifle platoon and even had the rank of lieutenant of the People's Militia of the LPR. The chief of staff insists and says that he has a sharp shortage of people for command positions, especially those with combat experience. Realizing that I can not get away from the post of platoon commander , I clarify what a fire support platoon means , what is in service with a platoon . He replies that the following types of weapons will be in service: AGS-17, ATGM and UTES. Here I already, so to speak, panicked, because not only do I not own these types of weapons - ATGM Utes, but I will not be able to properly command the personnel. As for the AGS - 17 , I fired from it once at the range during military service , no more .
The chief of staff listened to my arguments and said that then I would be the commander of an ordinary platoon. Then I finally understand that I can not avoid the command post . I ask him, what is in service with an ordinary platoon? Answers : AKM , PK , RPG - 7 . Then I calmed down a bit and told him that I was familiar with the infantry weapons and it would be much easier for me to command the infantry than the fire support group. By the way, there were also snipers in my platoon, as well as sappers. But here I am a complete layman. The decision has been made - they put me on the lists as an infantry platoon commander. Who in the subject will object to me saying that there is no such position as an infantry platoon commander. Yes , I agree . Therefore, I clarified, what kind of armored vehicles are in service with the platoon? I thought to hear the answer - BMP-1, I did not even hope to hear about the BMP-2, but the answer put me in a stupor: the platoon does not have any armored vehicles. A little later, I learn that there are no armored vehicles at all, there have not been and will not be volunteer battalions.
