The K3 Next Generation Tank is the ROK Army's next main battle tank that will be deployed in the 2030s. As the primary combat platform of the future mobile corps, it is a next-generation mobile system that has been dramatically improved in all aspects, including firepower, protection and mobility.
It's planned to be developed within the next 10 years and will have performance that could partially replace the K2 tank, and the weight/size of the system was reflected at a level similar to the current K2 tank.
According to information revealed at #ADEX2023, the new generation tank is less than 10.8 m long, 3.6 m wide and 2.4 m high, and has a combat weight of less than 55 tons.
It has a crew of 2 to 3 and is designed to enable selective unmanned operation when necessary.
The turret is unmanned and equipped with a 130 mm smoothbore gun and two anti-tank guided missiles, enabling line of sight/BLOS attacks.
To maximize survivability in future battlefield environments, the next-generation tank uses a metamaterial-based camouflage structure, a metamaterial-based RF and infrared stealth camouflage membrane, and a lightweight, rigid stealth structure that responds to multiple bands. (infrared, radar and millimeter waves).
Through the use of a capsule-type crew compartment and an unmanned turret design that allows for effective protection in conditions of limited weight, as well as through the use of ceramic armor with increased efficiency to achieve maximum survivability in the face of the latest threats.
Passive armor was used, consisting of ultra-high-hardness armor plates (UHA) and non-oxide ceramic armor materials arranged in a multi-layer structure, and the tank turret armor module was made of inert reactive armor (NERA) capable of protecting against large-diameter KE and CE projectiles.
Additionally, removable reactive armor (ERA) modules were installed on the sides and in the upper part of the tank, and lower armor and a mine protection kit were developed in accordance with the STANAG 4569 level 4a/4b standard (protection against TNT mines 10 kg).
The next-generation tank's intelligent fire control system can determine optimal tactics for battles in the future battlefield environment and maximize combat effectiveness and survivability by assigning missions to each tank.
Various core technology research and development for Next Gen MBT project are now underway.
