Kolehmainen reminds that drinking water represents "hugely important critical infrastructure" both in Finland and elsewhere.

According to Kolehmainen, water plant burglaries represent an area that the police must monitor closely and take into account when planning surveillance and prevention measures. He says that the police have warned several companies in critical infrastructure industries about possible threats.

"Of course, the protection of critical infrastructure belongs primarily to the owner. If there is a threat or a criminal matter, the police will come [to help], but the police do not basically guard anyone's private property," Kolehmainen points out.

The threat of Russian sabotage has increased

Intelligence services around Europe have warned about the increased threat of Russian sabotage during the spring. The protection police in Finland have also spoken about the matter. Water supply, which is considered a critical infrastructure, has been named as one of the possible targets of sabotage.

Kolehmainen does not begin to assess whether the water plant break-ins are a matter of Russian sabotage. He specifies that the preliminary investigation is in progress and the time for conclusions will be after the investigation is completed.

To achieve this, it is suggested to establish a special mechanism within the NB8-framework to strengthen collective defense and safeguard the stability and democratic integrity of the Nordic-Baltic region.

In May 2022, a homeowner from the small village of Rembate, an hour's drive from the Latvian capital Riga, was working in her garden when she saw a black car turn into her driveway. A young man got out. By the time the homeowner reached the gate, the car had driven off, leaving a folded piece of paper on the ground. She picked it up but quickly forgot about it, distracted by the newspapers the mailman had just delivered.

The next day, upon reading the note, she immediately handed it over to her son-in-law, who works in the Latvian Armed Forces. He informed his superior, who then contacted the Military Intelligence and Security Service. The next day, an investigator turned up at the woman’s house.

Australian police have announced they arrested two Australian citizens of Russian descent accused of spying, as per BBC.

Police emphasized that the information the couple accessed pertained to the country’s national security interests. They allegedly intended to transmit this data to the Russian authorities.

A 40-year-old Kira Koroleva, a soldier in the Australian Defense Forces, and her 62-year-old Igor Korolev were both detained at their home near Brisbane on 11 July. On the same day, they were charged with preparing for a spying operation. If the court finds them guilty, they will face 15 years sentence.

Police determined that during an extended leave in 2023, the woman made an undeclared trip to Russia with and without her husband.

While her spouse remained in Australia, she instructed him on how to access her official work account, obtain specific information, and send it directly to her private email while she was in Russia.

Police indicated that this is the third case in which charges of espionage or foreign interference have been brought since these crimes were included in the Criminal Code Act 1995.

Earlier, Australia announced a military aid package for Ukraine worth A$250 million (about $170 million) during the NATO summit in Washington, DC.

The package, revealed by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles, includes guided and air defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and boots.
