The German Foreign Ministry has summoned the Chinese Ambassador and submitted a formal diplomatic protest following an “incident” recently in the Red Sea, in which the Chinese military fired a high-powered laser at an aircraft with the German Navy that was participating in E.U. Operation Aspides against the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen.
During the EU’s Aspides mission, a Chinese warship targeted a German aircraft with a laser near its position. The aircraft, stationed in Djibouti, was on patrol. Germany responded by summoning the Chinese ambassador and denouncing the incident as “unacceptable.”

A Dutch cargo vessel reported a splash and explosion in its vicinity while transiting the Gulf of Aden, around 120 nm east of the port city of Aden, Yemen.
The 2011-built general cargo vessel Minervagracht reported a projectile landing around 2 nm away at 0320 hrs local time, according to maritime security company Vanguard. A warning report from UKMTO said the vessel and crew are both safe and continuing to their next port of call.
AIS data from Pole Star Global's PurpleTrac shows the ship sailed from Newport on the US East Coast, calling Durban, South Africa, and its current destination is Suez.
The ship is managed by Spliethoff, a Dutch owner operator of multipurpose geared vessels. Its ships all fly the Dutch flag, and there are no apparent ties to Israeli ownership or trading into Israel — the justification Yemen’s Houthis use for attacking merchant ships off Yemen’s coast.
