Porkuni battle

Tere my name is Michel and i'am from the Netherlands.
I life for a while in Eesti and i'am very interested in the history of Eesti, aspecialy WW2.
I know already a lot about Narva and the Dutch SS and about Saarema.
But i want to know more about the battle of Porkuni!
Is the any book ore site where i can find more info.
Our is there somebody that can tell me more about it?

OK, let´s do the job better!

Porkuni battle was the biggest fighting held between the Estonians in red army and the Estonians in German units. It took place in Sep. 21. 1944 between Lake Porkuni and Sauevälja village.

The reds´ Estonian Shooting Corps surrounded about 1500 Estonians in German uniforms, retreating from Tanneberg line in the Sinimäed area.

In the following battle ab. 500 surrounded men got killed, around 700 were captured. The reds had maschine guns and mine-throwers supported by artillery and tanks. The Estonians in German uniforms had only small arms and panzerfausts.

The villagers buried 273 killed Estonians in German uniform. In the reds´
side 73 men were killed, 57 of these had Estonian names.

Are the still things to see in the area, i have seen already the three monuments.
Was the big battle in the forest our near the village?

from newspaper "Postimees", Oct. 21, 2004...

...in Oct., 2004 there were official exhumations of Sauevälja and Vistla mass graves. There were found also Germans, although only Estonians were earlier supposed to be buried there.

The men had been buried in layers with overcoats placed between. The daggers, belts etc. were taken to Tamsalu museum.



In total 125 buried people were counted in two mass graves although the number was supposed to be bigger.





The battle was mostly in the forest and I quess there is nothing to be seen with the naked eye.
